WHAT SHAPED ME

My family and cultural community have been an important part of my journey as a Sʰamala Chumash language and cultural bearer. Their support has helped me carry forward and share our language and culture with the next generation.

WHY SYV FAMILY SCHOOL

I am an alumni parent. My son, Jordan Sandoval, graduated from The Family School’s Purple Door South in 2003. I returned as a Sʰamala teacher in 2014, and I am so grateful to be associated with The Family School. For more than fifty years, The Family School has been a vital part of the Santa Ynez Valley community, nurturing children and empowering families to support their students as they grow into independent and confident learners.

IN MY CLASSROOM

Most of my classes are outdoors. This provides a teaching space surrounded by a culturally rich landscape and encourages hands-on learning and exploration.

FAVORITE CHILDREN’S BOOK

The Rainbow Bridge by Audrey Wood, illustrated by Robert Florczak. The illustrations are incredible!

OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL

I enjoy the beach and mountains, as well as animal watching. I also often find myself working on handmade traditional art pieces.
