Ready or Not, Here We Go!

Aug 26
3 min read

After a summer of late nights, slow mornings, swimming, adventures, and plenty of time to just be, we’re getting ready to start another school year.

If tomorrow feels a little exciting, a little chaotic, or maybe a little bit of both, you’re not alone. Here are a few things that might help make the first day, and the first few days, a little easier.

Tonight, Do Yourself a Favor

Pack the backpacks. Find the water bottles. Put the shoes by the door. Pick out clothes for tomorrow.

Basically, do whatever you can tonight to make tomorrow morning a little less “Where is your other shoe?!”

And give yourself some extra time in the morning. First days have a way of taking a little longer than usual.

Don't Stress About Bedtime

If your summer bedtime has slowly crept later and later, you are definitely not alone. Tonight doesn’t have to be perfect.

Start winding things down, keep the evening calm, and give everyone a chance to settle in. If your child doesn't fall asleep right away, don't panic. One late night isn't going to ruin the school year.

Talk About Tomorrow

Some kids will be counting down the minutes until they get to school. Others might have some butterflies in their stomach. And some may be feeling both!

Talk about what they're looking forward to, who they can't wait to see, or anything they're wondering about.

And if they're nervous, that's okay too. You don't have to talk them out of it. Sometimes simply saying, “It's okay to feel nervous. New things can feel a little scary. We'll figure it out together,” is enough.

Keep the Morning Simple

Tomorrow is probably not the morning to try something new.

Keep breakfast easy. Keep the routine familiar. Give yourself a little extra time.

Get dressed. Eat breakfast. Brush teeth. Shoes. Backpack. Go!

And if something goes sideways? Take a breath. It’s the first day. We’ve got this.

Keep Goodbyes Short and Sweet

A hug, a high five, a special goodbye, or a quick “Have a great day, I can't wait to hear about it!” can go a long way.

And if there are tears at drop-off, remember that tears don't mean your child is going to have a bad day. New beginnings can be hard, and teachers are very good at helping children find their way into the day.

Trust your child. Trust the teachers. Trust that it will get easier.

After School, Give Them a Minute

You may be dying to know everything.

“How was your day?”

“What did you do?”

“Who did you play with?”

And you might get:

“Fine.”

That's okay.

The first day is a lot. Your child may be tired, hungry, quiet, silly, emotional…or all of the above. Give them a little time to decompress.

Maybe ask a more specific question later:

What made you laugh today? What was something new? Who did you play with? What was your favorite part?

Or don't ask anything at all. Sometimes the stories come out when you least expect them.

And One Last Thing...

You don't have to make tomorrow perfect.

Your child doesn't need the perfect lunch, the perfect outfit, or a perfectly calm morning. They just need to know that they are loved, they are capable, and that you are excited for them to begin this new year.

There will be big moments this year, and there will be plenty of ordinary days that end up being some of the best ones. SYV Family School will be right there with you along the way, cheering your children on and sharing in it all.

So pack those backpacks, set those alarms, give an extra-long hug tonight, and get ready.

We can't wait to see you tomorrow!

Here's to a wonderful new school year filled with learning, growing, exploring, friendship, laughter, and all the little moments that make SYV Family School so special.
