December at SYV Family School: Learning, Gratitude, Connection, and Celebration.
Earlier this year, we reflected on how routines and structure help children feel grounded, giving them the confidence, independence, and sense of belonging they need to thrive. In our most recent blog, we explored the power of connection and gratitude in learning and how these experiences strengthen students’ social-emotional growth. As we step into December, a month typically filled with reflection, tradition, and community, those themes feel especially meaningful.

Looking Back: Thanksgiving Traditions
Our Thanksgiving Turkey Trot and Thanksgiving Share were joyful reminders of what happens when movement, gratitude, and community come together. Students ran, laughed, shared what they were thankful for, and listened to classmates’ reflections. These simple but memorable moments showed us that learning is more than academics; it’s practicing empathy, celebrating one another, and building community.

Celebrating Community: Julefest Parade
Earlier this month, our students and families lit up the streets of Solvang in the Julefest Parade. With children riding proudly on the float and parents walking alongside, made possible by the creativity and hard work of our parent volunteers, the day captured the joy of tradition and togetherness. It was one of those experiences where the lessons we teach in the classroom, connection, gratitude, and teamwork, come to life in the most colorful way.
Looking Ahead: Winter Holidays
Later this week, our multi-holiday winter celebration will honor a variety of traditions, stories, and songs from around the world. By sharing and learning across cultures, we continue to nurture curiosity, understanding, and a strong sense of belonging. Whether in daily routines or special celebrations, we see how predictable rhythms paired with meaningful traditions help children feel safe enough to explore, brave enough to take risks, and joyful enough to celebrate each other’s differences.
At Home: The Power of Personal Traditions
In our own family, the holidays also bring a comforting rhythm. We celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas and travel east to be with extended family. Hanukkah means eight nights of candle-lighting, themed activities, small gifts, and a special Mitzvah Night devoted to doing good deeds for others. Christmas is filled with cousins, secret Santas, and rich holiday meals that bring everyone together. These traditions remind us of the importance of connection and celebration, the same values we hope to nurture here at school.

Routines and Traditions Go Hand in Hand
From the steady rhythms of the classroom to the energy of the Julefest Parade, from Thanksgiving reflections to our upcoming winter celebration, December is full of growth, connection, and joy. At SYV Family School, we honor both the everyday routines and the special traditions that make learning meaningful and memorable.
As we approach winter break, we encourage families to notice the routines and traditions that bring joy and gratitude into your homes. Whether it’s a predictable morning rhythm, a shared moment of reflection, or a beloved holiday tradition, these moments remind us that learning, gratitude, and connection are deeply intertwined, and that children flourish when they feel rooted in all three.
